For several centuries, the Etang de Virelles (Virelles Lake) was first and foremost a reservoir of water
for the forges. Although it later became a place of recreation for the Princes of
Chimay who bought it, it remained relatively wild and was known for its fish-filled waters
and concentrations of waterfowl.
