C'est par une entrée maçonnée sous la colline que devait s'effectuer la traversée du bassin de la Meuse jusqu'au bassin du Rhin. Ce vaste projet réduit à néant, le chemin de fer passant en ligne de crête a alors pris le relais pour transporter les marchandises.
