Ruins of the Beauraing Castle

Description

The castle of Beauraing is already mentioned in 1412 and was fortified in the 15th century by Jean II d’Herbigny, lord of Beauraing. From 1450 to 1620, the appearance of the château is determined by its owners of the time, the de Berlaymont family.
In 1793, the castle is burnt down by the revolutionaries before passing on to the dukes of Osuna. The château was rebuilt by the French architect Mestral, but a new fire in 1889 destroyed any trace of these improvements. Since 1945 the domain is the property of the non profit making association Pro Maria. One can still admire some remarkable vestiges, of which the South Tower known as the “Charles-Quint” (the French name for Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor) tower. This tower is the sturdiest and of semi-circular design, the two lower levels were probably built prior to the rest of the castle.
