Located in Calestienne at the confluence of the Eau Noire (Black Water) and Eau Blanche (White Water), the Roche à Lomme (Lomme Rock) is considered as one of the major limestone sites of Wallonia. Its rocky, arid land is home to exceptionally diverse fauna and flora. Hart's tongue fern, Globularia, and Aster Linosyris, not forgetting Box, are a few examples of the plants there. Some say this site is named after the romantic story of a man, a shepherd by trade, who fell to his death as he tried to save a ewe that had got lost in the rocky escarpments. Although the pastoral tradition is plausible, others choose the more likely explanation that this site was named after the presence of a Roman fortress at the top of the rocky spur, which is thought to have influenced the choice of the administrative boundaries of the "Pagus Lomacensis". The latter would become the County of Lomme in medieval times, and then the County of Namur.
