What are the differences between the SityTrail and SityTrail+ applications?
SityTrail
Maps
The SityTrail application downloads the maps in image (“raster”) format.
This allows compatibility with all the maps offered in Premium subscriptions of SityTrail, including the topographic maps from national geographic institutes (IGN France, IGN Belgium, swisstopo, ...).
However, map downloading is slower, the maps take up more space on your device, and the networks of marked routes (pedestrian networks: GR, European routes, St. James' Way, ..., cycling networks: Greenways in France, Ravel in Belgium, European routes, Node-Point networks in the Netherlands and in Flanders, …, ski slopes) are only accessible in connected mode.
Guidance when following a hike
When following a hike in the SityTrail application, only basic guidance with an oriented arrow is available.
SityTrail+
Maps
The SityTrail+ application includes a new optimized vector map engine.
This brings the following advantages:
- Much faster map downloading in zones.
- Maps use much less disk space.
- Maps are displayed in high definition, regardless of the zoom level
- In case of map rotation, texts remain properly oriented for readability
- You can also download the marked routes (pedestrian networks: GR, European routes, St. James' Way, ..., cycling networks: Greenways in France, Ravel in Belgium, European routes, Node-Point networks in the Netherlands and in Flanders, …, ski slopes) for offline use.
The maps accessible in this application are those available in vector format:
- SityTrail Topo World: worldwide topographic maps based on OpenStreetMap data with contour lines, relief shading, and highlighting of paths and trails, as well as tourist or useful points of interest for hiking. You can view them here: https://www.sitytrail.com/fr/demo/
- IGN France vector plan (does not contain GR, PR or Club Vosgien markings)
- Switzerland (swisstopo)
- Luxembourg
- Great Britain (Ordnance Survey)
- OpenStreetMap maps (non-topographic)
SityTrail+ does not give access to the official topographic maps of other national geographic institutes (IGN Belgium, ...) nor to the official 1/25,000 topographic maps of IGN France in raster / image format (with tourist information, GR, PR, Club Vosgien trails, …).
Guidance when following a hike
When following a hike in the SityTrail+ application, you can benefit from optimized “road-book” type guidance allowing turn-by-turn navigation with precise instructions on the direction to follow, the name of the street, … at each intersection.
Offered subscriptions
You will find the detailed comparison of the available subscriptions in the SityTrail and SityTrail+ applications here: What are the differences between the Premium / Premium Plus subscriptions offered?
And the SityTrail World application?
If you still have the SityTrail World application on your device, we advise you to update it to SityTrail+ via the Play Store or the AppStore to benefit from all the improvements available in this application (roadbook guidance, IGN vector map, vector maps for Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Great Britain).
Nevertheless:
- some older devices do not support the SityTrail+ application
- on newer Huawei devices that do not have Google services and the Play Store, only the old SityTrail World application is offered on the Huawei AppGallery.
In that case, you can temporarily continue using the old SityTrail World application with OpenStreetMap and SityTrail Topo World maps and the marked routes, but we do not guarantee its operation in the long run anymore.
