Description

At the dawn of the 20th century, a vast housing estate plan was created in Balmoral: SPA-EXTENSION. It offered large plots of land, largely planted with trees, on the north-eastern ridge of the spa town.
This innovative principle of a Spa housing estate for luxury villas, planned in harmony with nature, has been a great success in seaside resorts since the end of the 19th century.
Little by little, beautiful villas were built in vast parks and gardens, creating a wonderful link of continuity with the built environment. Blending tradition and innovation, the villas of Balmoral are a continuation of the flourishing period of Spa, far from the nuisances of the city. To make their dreams come true, the owners have often called on local and national architects and landscape designers with a recognised reputation.

From the Tourist Office, the walker will take the Boulevard des Anglais to the Rue du Jeu de Paume, which he will take to reach Balmoral, at the Léopold II - Frahinfaz crossroads, the starting point of the walk.

The subject of an agreement signed in 1906 between the Belgian State, a Spadois owner (Josse Gihoul) and a Brussels engineer (Joseph Hans), the vast plan for the development of the area was
(Joseph Hans), the vast subdivision plan, SPA-EXTENSION, proposes a residential area with large plots of land devoted to the construction of residential houses surrounded by gardens, exclusively of the villa type, a hotel-restaurant (the current Radisson-Balmoral) and an undeveloped area where sports grounds will be developed, including a golf course (Royal Golf Club des Fagnes.) This area will be called Balmoral. Witness to the appreciable number of English tourists visiting Spa, BALMORAL refers to the Scottish castle of the English royal family, acquired by Queen Victoria in 1856.
