Martincourt served as a staging post for the French Colonial Corps during its retreat to the left bank of the Meuse. The village also became a logistics base for forces from the German 11th Division (ID). The men and equipment of this division, which advanced through the pass of the Ferme d’Heurtebise, then became a target for the French artillery.
