Behind the houses is a green landscape consisting largely of pasture. Many of these fields are still lined with
hedges, mainly blackthorn and hawthorn.
There are also fields under cultivation: oats, barley and spelt are all grown, and in recent years maize has become increasingly common.
In 1841, the general layout of the occupied area was the same as today, although at that time the houses were
mostly of wood and daub with thatched roofs. They were also terraced. The influence of the Famenne is clear here.
Until the 20th century, almost every inhabitant owned cattle. The man of the house would usually work as a day labourer or craftsman, but cultivated a small plot of land.
Crop yields were poor in this area, so the farms specialised in livestock. A few farms still exist today where butter is made and sold.
