The commemorative cross on your left dates from 1708. This type of cross is locally known as a ‘croix-d’occis’. This old-French word (from the Old French ‘occire’ to slay), is used to designate a commemorative cross that remembers a person that died from unnatural causes (usually an accident). There are three different types of commemorative crosses:
• sudden, violent death (assault, crimes of passion),
• accidents (mine workers squashed by a block of stone, hunting accidents, drowning, being struck by lightning)
• natural causes (heart attack).
As well as the circumstances of death, these crosses mention the victim’s age and name.
