My trail does not record properly in background or screen off mode
For Android
In order for certain features of the app (recording, following, downloading, etc.) to work when the screen is off, or in the background, you often need to change certain settings of your device.
First, make sure that you have not activated a power saving mode in your device's battery settings or any other setting that would cause the GPS to stop when the screen is switched off.
On Sony devices, in particular, enabling "Stamina mode" causes this issue

After changing these settings, a restart of the device may be required for them to take effect.
For iOS (iPhone / iPad)
Go to the "SityTrail" section of the "Settings" app on your iPhone / iPad and check that the settings are set as shown in this screenshot:
